First thing that everyone wants to know – how long will it take? My answer is: “It really depends on how fast you adapt to new environments, learn new things and expand your mindset.’’ Only you can answer those questions.
If you feel lost and do not know where to start, here are a few ideas.
Goals are an important motivator, however, not everyone knows how to use it and even scientifically little is known about why and how people set them.
Usually we see goals as a reference points for performance or to increase an individual’s motivation. Yes, it could work like it, but only up to a certain point. Very quickly goal setting can swing in other direction and to become a painful self-disciplining device. Think about a perfectionist you know.
In many cases goal setting can end in greater self-control problems. This is the reason why I do not work with goals, but with a whole person. You set a direction, but if during coaching process we find something more important – we may switch to it.
If we work with only one goal in mind, after end of our coaching relationship you will be able to solve only this one goal on your own. If we work on transformation of your whole, at the end of coaching you are in completly new level and can deal with things in new ways.
A change means that new habits should be built. How long does it take to create a habit? The most known opinion is that a transformation takes 30 days. That information is from the 1960s and it was not a research, but an observation of one surgeon of his patients. The study published 2009 in the European Journal of Social Psychology by Phillippa Lally and her colleagues reveals a different picture. On average it takes about 66 days to create a new habit. There are many factors that influence the process of building a habit. Starting with the habit itself and then of course you – how committed and mature you are.
It is easy to start a simple habit, something that requires just one action. For example: to drink a glass of water before each meal or to floss your teeth after brushing them. Complex habits are something that involve several actions. For example: going to the gym three times per week. It requires packing the gym bag, driving to the gym, doing activities, driving home, washing gym stuff.
Complex habits are harder to build and it is recommended to start transformation with those after you have experienced success with several simple habits.
Neuronal plasticity is defined as the ability of the brain to change its structure and/ or function in response to internal and external constraints or goals (Pascual-Leone, Amedi, Fregni, & Merabet, 2005). Plasticity is a key component of neural development and normal functioning of the nervous system: to remain robust and stable. But also as a response to the changing environment, ageing, or pathological insult.
Why I am telling you this? Science has proven that humans are not hard-wired and our brain is able to rebuild missing or lost parts of itself. However, it is still too early to say how exactly it works and how we can use it to our advantage. Up to date, it is known that consistent aerobic exercise, multilingualism and meditation can have a positive impact on multiple brain regions. Yes, you got it right – if you want to make it easier for you to transform your behaviour or to adapt to new situations – start exercising, meditate or learn a new language!
